about

More fun with cicada sounds. In the last week the cacophony has swelled to an intensity that verges on the physically oppressive - to say nothing of the experience of trying to take a mid-day walk without being divebombed by cicadas and other insects (the other insects want to suck my blood). Also it's soooo humid.

It can all be overwhelming.

With "The Screaming Trees" I wanted to provide an altered but less chaotic or cluttered version of my other recent cicada track. So what you get here is a doubling of a new recording from a few days ago, one several seconds behind the other. The two copies were played through different players on my laptop, then recorded into my iPhone.

(Something about the process muted the overall intensity of sound, though; at some point when I'm more knowledgeable or have better equipment it might be fun to re-try this and see what results.)

For "The Screaming Seize" the same approach was taken, but recorded into Audacity - all on the same laptop. When this is done the resulting recording winds up desiccated and shriveled.

"Pure Nature" is the original audio capture, that straight hardcore uncut sound that everyone in this neighborhood is somehow learning to live with because, like, what are our choices?

Dedicated to my dad, Robert Cummings Jr, on his birthday. He probably won't listen to it and that's OK.

Headphones are recommended.
